| Once, I
thought that intuition was something that some people were graced with
at birth—and which the rest of us just have to struggle to acquire. I
was convinced that I was one of those persons who had to struggle to
“get” it. I had this viewpoint despite the fact that a psychic thread
runs in my family. But perhaps because I wasn’t like the psychic
performers I saw in the media, I discounted my own innate ability. Then I awakened to the fact that intuition is a natural gift born in everyone. Some people seem more naturally at ease with it than others, but everyone has the ability to be wonderfully intuitive. However, even when I recognized my own intuitive ability, I still treated it like a product. It was something you “had,” and you could put it to use whenever you needed it, just like a handy tool in your toolbox. Then I had another awakening. Intuition is not something you have, but is a way of being. The more you allow your intuition to open, the more you change, and your life changes profoundly with you. You experience a deeper wisdom about yourself, about life, and about living your life according to the highest principles. Your heart opens. Intuition brings out the authentic self. Along the path of these awakenings, I was drawn to the warm, witty, and wise work of Henry Reed. I remember clearly what I was thinking as I sat in the audience of one particular workshop. Henry had just explained how we were going to do an intuition exercise, which involved tapping into our memories. I was intrigued, but skeptical. It seemed radically different from other exercises I’d learned. “I don’t see how this can work,” I thought, “at least for me.” By the end of the exercise, I was astonished, not only by my results, but also by the unique process Henry had developed for allowing intuition to blossom. I was excited, because Henry was teaching what I was already experiencing: that intuition is not just a gift or ability, but a way of life. Many books on intuition teach techniques. A few teach how to make intuition a natural part of your lifestyle. Even fewer show how intuition becomes in itself a path of love through life. All of these gifts—techniques, lifestyle, and path—are delivered in Henry’s book, The Intuitive Heart, coauthored by Brenda English. Three terms come to mind that describe Henry’s work. One is “innovative.” You can count on Henry to be at the frontiers of creativity and change. A second term is “effective.” The innovative techniques and approaches Henry develops in his teaching are always effective. A third term is “loving.” Henry’s work is innovative and effective because he approaches it, and life, from a point of love. A good teacher is someone who enables you to discover for yourself what you are capable of achieving. A good teacher is someone who helps you bring out your best. In The Intuitive Heart, Henry invites you to step onto the path of love and discover what your intuition is and how it speaks to you. From the moment you begin, you are fully engaged in the process, gently circling the labyrinth of yourself to your own deep center. You discover that intuition is much more than obtaining answers to questions about what to do. It concerns becoming one with everything around you—with all life. This is truly being “in the flow.” When we are in the flow, we experience a wonderful fullness of life. Not only do we improve our own lives, we are able to help others, too, and from a point of love, empathy, and compassion. We bring out our best. One of the hardest hurdles facing people in intuition is trusting what they get. It’s easy to second-guess and wonder if your inner guidance is intuition or imagination. For a number of years, I gave psychic readings—or “intuitive consultations,” as many people call them now. First, I did them informally for friends and then professionally for clients. I don’t think I ever gave a single reading in which the client did not already know the answers to the questions he or she brought to the session, even if they professed that they didn’t. They sought readings because they didn’t trust what they already knew from their own intuitive wisdom, or perhaps they weren’t ready to acknowledge what they already knew. Sometimes they wanted an outside authority to tell them what to do. They didn’t know how to retrieve their own wisdom. Like Henry, I’d much rather see people realize and trust their own intuition. Your Higher Self truly knows what is in your best interests and will guide you accordingly. You have everything within you to obtain the guidance you need. What I especially like about The Intuitive Heart is how easily Henry’s process moves you into trust and confidence. Your own wisdom, accumulated from your life experiences, is stored in memories. Henry shows you how to work with your memories to make powerful connections to your own wisdom. Everything is drawn from within. Following The Intuitive Heart will help you with much more than decisions—it will enhance your ability to love and be close to others. As we go through life, we are called to higher and higher ideals. I call this the “Path of Beauty, Virtue, and Truth.” Beauty is a dimension of heaven that we experience when we show respect for all others and all life, and also when we see the beauty in another soul. The Intuitive Heart will show you Beauty. Virtue is right living, which is not a monk’s life, but the life that unfolds when we open to love: We are where we need to be, and we do what we are meant to do. The Intuitive Heart will take you there. Truth is undefinable, something that we intuit and understand in a mystical way. Truth concerns the Great Mystery, and we all must discover it for ourselves.
