definition
of the indefinite category involves
minimal
recall of at least some content ("distress,"
"image
of threatening face"), but no recall of the
theme
of the dream, or what the dream was about.
Indefinite
recall represents an improvement over
awareness,
in that at least some content is recalled.
Recall
of feelings, moods or images- any type of
specific
content- qualifies for the indefinite rating.
There
may be two or more related recollections on
a
single morning, but if they together provide no
knowledge
of what the dream was about, they
qualify
as one instance of indefinite recall.
Fragmentary
(F): "All I could recall was the feeling of
distress; I
was running away from something or
someone who
was chasing me." Here a theme of
the dream is
recalled- being chased. There may be
other themes
in the dream which cannot be
recalled, but
what is recalled does provide some
knowledge of
what the dream was about, which is
the basis of
the definition of the fragmentary
rating.
Instances of fragmentary recall represent
an improvement
over cases of indefinite recall in
that the content
remembered conveys knowledge
of what the
dream was about. To qualify as
fragmentary,
there should be at least some know-
ledge of the
theme of the dream. Yet, at the most,
fragmentary
is used only so long as what is recalled
consists primarily
of a single "frame" of the
dream-that is,
when not enough is recalled to
provide any
"flow" to the story, when there is no
"and then"
to indicate transition.
Partial (P):
"The feeling of distress. I was running away
from someone.
(And then) I fell down and was very
frightened,
because (and then) I couldn't move and
was helpless."
This example shows some flow to
the dream narrative,
from running, to falling down
and being paralyzed.
Little of the dream may be
recalled, but
there is enough recalled to indicate a
transition which
would provide some knowledge
about the dynamics
or logic of the psychological
